What is the Gospel?

THE GOOD NEWS OF THE GOSPEL

The word Gospel literally means "Good News." And good news it is! The Gospel tells us that God in Christ Jesus has done everything we need to be restored to the God who created us and designed us to know Him and enjoy Him forever.

Here is a brief summation of the Gospel:

God created us for His glory.

“For from him and through him and to him are all things.  To him be glory forever. Amen.”  (Romans 11:36)

God has made us so that our greatest joy, satisfaction, and purpose are found in Him.

But we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

“For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.”   (Romans 3:23)

Sin (any want of conformity unto, or transgression of, the law of God) separates us from God. Due to Adam’s sin, all humanity is born into sin.

Sin results in physical death and spiritual death.

“For the wages of sin is death…”  (Romans 6:23)

The Bible says that result of our sin is death. Sin results not only in physical death, and eternal spiritual death (Punishment in Hell).

But God freely gives eternal life.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life.”   (Romans 6:23)

While death is something we earn because of our sin, eternal life is a free gift God offers to all who will come to Christ because of what He has done on the cross.

Jesus was our substitute on the Cross.

“Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures…”   (1 Corinthians 15:3)

Because the wages of sin is death, Jesus bore our sin and died on the cross in our place. Jesus died, bearing the wrath of God and experienced separation from God for His people. Because Jesus bore the penalty of sin for us, the Good News is we don't have to!

God accepts the sacrifice of Jesus so that we may be reconciled to Him.

“He made Him who knew no sin to be sin in our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

(2 Corinthians 5:21)

Christ Jesus is the well-spring of all the blessings of God toward us. On the cross, Jesus paid for our sin, satisfied the wrath of God, provided us His righteous standing before God, and everything that God requires of us was accomplished by Christ Jesus.

What is our response to the Gospel?

"What must I do to be saved?” They said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved."  (Acts 16:30-31)

Christ has done everything that we need to be reconciled to God. He has paid the debt of our sin. He has perfectly fulfilled the Law for us. He has destroyed the works of the devil.  All that is required of us is faith.

Faith is not simply an acknowledgement of existence. The devil believes there is a God. Biblical faith, however, means  trust. We trust that what Christ has done for us is our only hope to stand before a holy God.

This Biblical Faith is also a gift of God. By grace through faith we turn from our sin in repentance and trust in Christ Jesus alone. This is what the Bible calls salvation.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not a result of works, so that no one can boast.”   (Ephesians 2:8-9)

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, this person is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.”   (2 Corinthians 5:17)
