1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith

Calvary Baptist Phillipsburg

Who we are…

At Calvary Baptist Phillipsburg, our expressed purpose is to glorify God in all that we do.

We hold to the absolute authority, infallibility, inspiration, and sufficiency of the Scriptures. We boldly proclaim the centrality of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and God’s sovereign grace in salvation. We seek to worship our God and Savior in spirit and truth through the singing of psalms and hymns and by rightly dividing the Scriptures through verse by verse expository preaching.

We are a doctrinally conservative congregation that holds to a reformed understanding of the Scriptures in a Baptistic tradition. The term "reformed" comes from the period of church history called "The Reformation" (1517-1648), when important Biblical truths were recovered and reemphasized, truths that we embrace to this day. At Calvary Baptist Phillipsburg we have chosen to identify ourselves as Reformed Baptists and adhere to the 1689 Second London Baptist Confession of Faith.

We are also members of the National Family-Integrated Church Network. At the most basic level, the family-integrated church is one that is intentionally designed to eliminate what we believe to be unnecessary, and often harmful, age-segregated structures from the church’s ministry. Therefore, all children at Calvary Baptist Phillipsburg attend all of the corporate worship gatherings with their parents rather than attending a separate children’s ministry. As a family-integrated local church, it is our goal to equip fathers/husbands to lead their wives and children in the worship of God on a daily basis within the home. We desire to cultivate an intergenerational discipleship model by placing the responsibility for disciple-making within the context of the family primarily upon the parents rather than relying on various church programs. While we do not believe that family-integration is the most important matter in church life, we do believe it is the biblical model and, therefore, a critical matter. Our desire is to see families thrive and grow together in the worship of Christ Jesus.

The 5 Solas of the Reformation

What are the 5 Solas?

The Five Solas are five Latin phrases (or slogans) that emerged from the Protestant Reformation (1517-1648) intended to summarize the Reformers' basic theological principles in contrast to certain errant teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.

Sola Gratia (Grace Alone)

In salvation we are rescued from God's wrath by his grace alone. It is the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit that brings us to Christ by releasing us from our bondage to sin and raising us from spiritual death to spiritual life. It is denied that salvation is in any sense a human work. Human methods, techniques or strategies by themselves cannot accomplish this transformation. Faith is not produced by our unregenerated human nature.

Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone)

The inerrant Scripture (the Bible) is the sole source of written divine revelation, which alone can bind the conscience. The Bible alone teaches all that is necessary for our salvation from sin and is the standard by which all Christian behavior must be measured. It is denied that any creed, council or individual may bind a Christian's conscience, that the Holy Spirit speaks independently of or contrary to what is set forth in the Bible, or that personal spiritual experience can ever be a vehicle of revelation.

Solus Christus (Christ Alone)

Our salvation is accomplished by the mediatorial work of the historical Christ Jesus alone. His sinless life and substitutionary atonement alone are sufficient for our justification and reconciliation to the Father. It is denied that the gospel is preached if Christ's substitutionary work is not declared and faith in Christ and His work is not solicited.

sola Fide (faith alone)

Justification is by grace alone through faith alone because of Christ alone. In justification, Christ's righteousness is imputed to us as the only possible satisfaction of God's perfect justice. Our justification does not rest on any merit to be found in us, nor upon the grounds of an infusion of Christ's righteousness in us, nor that an institution claiming to be a church that denies or condemns sola fide can be recognized as a legitimate church.

Soli DEO gloria (to the Glory of god alone)

It is affirmed that because salvation is of God and has been accomplished by God, it is for God's glory and that we must glorify him always. We must live our entire lives before the face of God, under the authority of God and for his glory alone. It is denied that we can properly glorify God if our worship is confused with entertainment, if we neglect either Law or Gospel in our preaching, or if self-improvement, self-esteem or self- fulfillment are allowed to become alternatives to the gospel.

God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
— Philippians 2:9-11
